Life begins from the ocean and circles back to its origin -- this is the starting point of our thinking on the Costa Concordia shipwreck. In the proposal, we seek to establish an architectural dialogue between the memorial lighthouse and the ocean, where visitors can experience the power of nature, which calls to the memory of he deceased ones and leads to a retrospection of the disaster.
As sea level changes throughout a year, the path to the memorial lighthouse will be partially submerged or exposed. Seawater fluctuation range at the site is about 0.5 meter. When sea level is low, all of the path will be exposed; whereas when sea level is high, it is slightly submerged. Visitors are presented with a journey across the shallow water to reach the lighthouse.
